Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society and in the US has been observed in the month of March since 1987. 1021BOB-FM has partnered with Security Bank of Kansas City to celebrate the extraordinary women who helped shape the music industry and Kansas City! Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood and Shania Twain are trailblazers who bridged the gap between their music and style. Artists like them show that being yourself and being true to your own vision can be a breath of fresh air to a sometimes-confining genre. Music fans love their authenticity!
Esther Swirk Brown, a civil rights activist, attended Paseo high school and later moved to Merriam, Kansas. There she discovered the appalling conditions of the local black school. Despite receiving numerous threats, she continued to fight injustice and was a vocal supporter of the landmark Brown v. Board decision to mandate the desegregation of schools.
Sarah Chandler Coates was a suffragette, abolitionist, and progressive social leader known as the “Queen of Quality Hill.” Sarah ran charities out of her home, promoted the arts and sciences, and supported anti-slavery organizations. Sarah also led the local women’s suffrage club and founded the ’81 Club, a women’s group still in existence today.
