- Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton and Shania Twain all bridged the gap between their music, style and are trailblazers. Artists like them show that being yourself and being true to your own vision can be a breath of fresh air to a sometimes-confining genre. Fans love authenticity. Especially country music fans.
- Katharine Berry Richardson and Alice Berry Graham. Their passion for helping the ill and unfortunate inspired them to establish a free children’s hospital in 1897. In 1904, they secured funding to build a new hospital named Children’s Mercy. Today, the institution is recognized as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.
- Lucile Harris Bluford, a journalist and civil rights crusader who is best known for her 70-year career at the Kansas City Call newspaper where she worked her way up from reporter to publisher. She also served on the national board of the NAACP and was named Kansas Citian of the year in 2002 by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
